Nova is one of the few anime-only characters in Magic Knight Rayearth, but was actually designed by the studio CLAMP itself. There is proof of that in CLAMP's second MKR Artbook. She was designed to be an antagonist for Hikaru, and does indeed resemble the magic knight, especially in the later episodes. Both have the mop of hair on top of their heads, and their faces are exactly alike, except for Nova's obviously elven ears and demented expression.

When we first see Nova, she is a shadowy figure talking to Lady Debonair (her adopted mother...shudder) and for the most part, sounds rather, uh...creepy, with all the death threats. The idea of Hikaru loving someone else other than Nova, is repulsive to the elven one, and she threatens to crush, kill, and incinerate every being that Hikaru remotely likes. Gradually, 'Mother Debonair's' teachings start to contradict what Hikaru wants, and thus, by the end of the series, Nova is definitely rattled and confused, as she only wants to do Hikaru a favor...

Nova is the shadow monster created by Hikaru's heart, as the Magic Knight couldn't deal with the thought that she had killed Princess Emeraude, and that she failed to save her. And since the Magic Knights returned to Cephiro directly after killing the Pillar, Nova was left to wander alone, where Debonair found her, and fed her the idea that Hikaru would be happy if Nova killed her and her friends off...poor kid. ^^;;
